The patient was a 22-year-old man who developed facial swelling, thickened lips, and enlargement of the liver and spleen beginning in December 2019. He later developed slurred speech and behavioral or mental-status changes. Over the next two years, he was evaluated at several hospitals in Shanghai and underwent a lip biopsy, tonsillectomy, and stereotactic brain biopsy, but no definitive diagnosis was reached.
